Deep tech rarely advances alone, it moves through shared labs, university partnerships, consortia and joint pilots, because the problems are too large and the equipment too expensive for one small team. Every one of those arrangements assigns ownership of whatever gets invented inside it, and the assignment is often made by default rather than by decision. Improvements developed during a trial, data generated on a partner’s site, methods worked out with an academic group, each has an owner, and small companies frequently find out who it is later than they would like.

The most useful help at that point is often not a document, it is someone who has already signed one. Membership puts a company alongside others that have negotiated the same partnerships and worked through the same questions, and that knowledge tends to arrive earlier, and land harder, than any template.
